After a 5 year gap I finally organised a long-overdue trip to the breathtaking South Island. Whilst negotiating the icy switchbacks up to Queentown's Coronet Peak, I managed to find a space to pull over to set up for this shot - 'The Remarkables' mountain range in the Southern Alps. I would have stayed for longer but numb fingers got the better of me! The scale of the alps is truly jaw-dropping - a single picture just can't do it justice - a visit is essential.

A shot of a lone walker atop Mount Wellington, Auckland. I felt the contrast of the walker against the tree, combined with the shadows and tones of the scene deserved black and white...

Have finally found some time to sort through my ever-growing photo archive, and perform some much-needed spring cleaning. Stumbled across this shot of the majestic Mount Taranaki that I took during a road trip around the North Island back in July of 2009. I had just driven south from Waitomo along the wild Forgotten World Highway (highly recommended!) into Taranaki. At over 2.5km high the mountain dominates the Taranaki Region from all directions. It is one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world - looking equally impressive from above.

The first shot to make it to my website from a long overdue return trip to the timeless Whatipu - one of my (many) favourite places in New Zealand. The entire north west coastline has a rugged and breathtaking beauty - especially in stormy weather - but Whatipu's isolation takes that feeling one step further. Unlike the majority of my other shots on Scenic Splash, I chose to process this one in black and white to bring out the texture of the peaks against the contrast of the water line. I hope you like it.
